Visit Birmingham is a communications initiative that promotes the city as a leisure destination both in the UK and around the world. After decades of investment, the it is now recognised as a visitor destination of some repute centred around a globally renowned retail offer.

Birmingham is also a hive of entertainment and cultural activity that serves as a gateway to the rest of the region. We live here and we can also testify that Birmingham is among the greatest cities in the world.

A new VisitBirmingham.com? Sounds like a job for One Black Bear.

Following on from successful projects with Marketing Birmingham on their inward investment and events marketing themes, we were delighted to be awarded the jewel-in-the-crown. The latest iteration of VisitBirmingham.com – the official visitor website for Birmingham and the region.

We were appointed due to our innovative creative approach and our ability to work with the huge amounts of data that the site was required to handle.

Being a website for visitors, it was important to put it in the palms of peoples hands as a ready reference for visitors actually in Birmingham, as well as serving the needs of people researching the city's offer from afar.

We used responsive layout technology to create a stylesheet for each page template that reconfigures itself, on-the-fly, to the screen resolution of the device that the site is being viewed on. Widescreen laptops, portrait tablets and mobile devices are all catered for in one flexible design.

The dynamic homepage configuration can be set up to publicise and link out to an infinite amount of internal and external links.

A huge consideration in the make-up of the site was a new version of the existing Maps, Directories and What's On sections. We proposed to merge all these sections into one new dynamic section called Explore Birmingham.

This puts events, venues and accommodation data together. They are then filtered by a postcode-aware keyword search and sets of related category options. Each entry is mapped using Google Maps and events can also be filtered by date span. Powerful stuff.

Coming for the day or staying longer? Build an itinerary and share it.

The coolest part of Explore Birmingham is the itineraries feature. This enables users to assemble entries from their 'Explore' searches into timelines over a few hours, a whole day, a weekend or even longer. Users can the save these itineraries and share them with their friends and family using the social web. After the saved itineraries move into the past tense, users are notified by email and are prompted to upload photos and videos from their visit which, upon successful moderation, appear on the site.
